SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly Digital Transformation Hub (DxHub), powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS), has announced two free, weeklong Artificial Intelligence (AI) summer camps on the Cal Poly campus this summer.
The first camp is for 100 students from California State University campuses. The camp takes place July 27-Aug.1. All lodging, meals, and camp participation costs are covered. Over 850 CSU students have applied, and those selected for the camp will be notified by May 23, 2025.
The second camp, running Aug. 3-7, is for 100 California Community College students, and applications are being accepted until June 7 at dxhub.calpoly.edu/ai-camp. Those selected for the CCC camp will be notified by June 14. All lodging, meals, and camp participation costs are covered for participants. Only transportation to and from San Luis Obispo and parking, if applicable, is required by selected participants.
Over 850 CSU students applied to the CSU camp over the last four weeks, based on a viral marketing campaign led by Cal Poly DxHub-affiliated students. This response demonstrates the enormous demand for AI skills. Current CSU undergraduate and graduate students in all majors were welcome to apply — no prior AI experience required. The same is true for participants in the CCC camp — all majors are welcome, and no AI experience is required.
Participants will work on cross-collaborative teams to solve real, pressing challenges and opportunities in the California State University and California Community College systems submitted by faculty and staff. Student teams will learn core AI skill sets and apply them to those challenges during the week of camp. At the end of the week, teams will pitch their ideas and prototypes to their peers and mentors.
Staff, faculty and administrators can submit real world problems for the CSU and CCC camps at the DX Hub website.
“We are proud to offer these free immersions into AI,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. “AI seems likely to be important for years to come, and we want every student to understand how to use it wisely and well. These camps are a great start!”
The camps are designed to accelerate students’ career trajectories and prepare them for the AI-driven future, developing practical skills that employers are actively seeking, and joining a network of AI-capable professionals shaping California’s technological landscape.
The CSU AI Summer Camps are part of the California State University system’s equitable access initiative to expand AI workforce capabilities and accelerate technological innovation across the state.
