Cal Poly’s Amy S. Fleischer Elected Vice Chair of ASEE Engineering Deans Council

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly College of Engineering Dean Amy S. Fleischer has been named the new vice chair of the executive board of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Engineering Deans Council.

As the College of Engineering dean, Fleischer is an accomplished leader in engineering education and innovation. She has made significant strides in advancing engineering education, research, diversity and inclusion, and community engagement.

“I am deeply honored to be elected as vice chair of the executive board of the ASEE Engineering Deans Council,” said Fleischer, who was elected by engineering deans across the nation. “I look forward to working with my colleagues as we continue to enhance our educational programs, ensuring that we prepare our students to meet the challenges of the future.”

Fleischer is a nationally recognized dean, most recently receiving the Society of Women Engineers Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Award for her exceptional leadership in fostering an inclusive community in STEM.

Leading the College of Engineering since 2018, she oversees nine departments, 14 undergraduate and 10 graduate degree programs, 220 full-time faculty, 55 staff and 6,000 students. Under her leadership, the college has significantly diversified its student body, increasing the percentage of women to 33% from 26% and Hispanic/Latino students to more than 25% from 12.5% in five years. She also led the creation of the 2023-28 Strategic Plan, which involved more than 1,600 stakeholders, emphasizing diversity, equity and inclusion in the college's mission and goals.

In her role as vice chair, Fleischer will work closely with the council chair and other members to further ASEE’s mission of promoting excellence in engineering education. She will focus on strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of academic programs nationwide, advocating for policies that support educational excellence and fostering collaboration among engineering institutions.

The ASEE Engineering Deans Council is a vital component of the organization, comprising deans from engineering colleges and schools across the country. The council provides leadership and guidance on issues related to academic programs and works to influence national policy in support of engineering programs.
