Cal Poly Winter Jazz Concert on Feb. 24 to Feature Cuesta College’s Voce

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Cal Poly Winter Jazz Concert will feature guest ensemble Voce, Cuesta College’s vocal jazz group, and world premieres from the Cal Poly jazz program at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Miossi Hall of the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.

 

Cal Poly’s Jazz Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Ensemble (MOSAIC) and Voce will perform works by Thad Jones, Duke Ellington, John Beasley, KNOWER and others. The Cal Poly groups are led by Director of Jazz Studies Arthur White; and Voce is directed by Cuesta College Music Department Chair John Knutson.

Voce has performed at the American Choral Directors Association National Convention, the Montreux Jazz Festival and the International Association for Jazz Education Convention.

Three big band charts will have world premieres: “New Day” by music major Wyatt Willard is an adventurous, odd-metered composition; “Inundación” by mechanical engineering major Bryce Yuen is inspired by salsa music; and “Bishop Peak” by White was recorded by the Cal Poly Jazz Ensemble in 2020 for its album “another time, another place.”

 

The three groups will combine for the final number, White’s arrangement of the New York Voices’ “Do You Wanna Know What I Want.”

 

Tickets to the concert are $15 and $20 general, $10 for students and Jazz Federation members. Tickets can be purchased from the Cal Poly Ticket Office between noon and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Music Department offers a 20% discount to patrons who buy season tickets to four of its events through the Cal Poly Ticket Office. The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program.
