Biography
Joni Roberts, an esteemed academic and a leading advocate in the fight against health and education disparities, has significantly impacted marginalized communities in the U.S. Originally from the Caribbean, her journey reflects an unwavering commitment to bettering the lives of others, especially women of color. She focuses her research on understanding how social factors influence health and identifying practical solutions to address the inequalities.
Her efforts on health disparities and women’s health explores the complex relationship between sexual health, physical activity and interventions for obesity. Her work to create inclusive programs and initiatives designed for marginalized communities extends beyond academia. The Los Angeles Times in April 2024 highlighted her work in discussing AI as a tool for detecting sexually transmitted infections, drawing attention to the possibilities and challenges of integrating technology in healthcare.
Her career, defined by an unwavering pursuit of equity and justice in health and education, is helping reshape the landscape of obesity management and sexual health while setting the stage for more inclusive and effective healthcare solutions for future generations. In 2024, she received the Boston Congress of Public Health renowned 40 Under 40 Public Health Catalyst Award. Research Interests
Roberts’ research in the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics has involved leading projects that examine how various social determinants — involving discrimination, work, health access, among others — affect health and identify structural solutions in partnership with communities to address health inequities. She also studies cultural beliefs, implicit bias and health disparities that impact the preconception period before a woman gives birth. Moreover, Roberts is particularly interested in the effects of culture and health decisions among marginalized populations.
